Staining Your Deck 101

With year-round exposure to sun, rain, and snow, the weather takes a toll on the looks of your deck. Your decks finish will slowly start to wear off, leaving your wood looking old and in bad shape. Remember, it is not just the appearance of your home that suffers; the wood is also losing its layer of protection which rots and splits the boards. To prevent this from happening it is important to have your deck stained every couple of years. Here are the steps to get the job done:

  • Test your deck – Sprinkle some water on top of your deck. If the water bead up, the deck is still protected, if the water soaks through, it is time to be refinished right away.
  • Prepare the surface – Sweep away any debris that has accumulated on the deck. Once the debris is gone, pressure-wash or spray down the deck before getting started.
  • Apply cleaner and brighteners – Before applying, make sure that you read all the instructions on whether to apply to wet or dry surface.
  • Choose a Stain – Look into the different varieties of sealers before you get started. Each type of stain lasts for a different amount time.
