Picking the Perfect Paint Color for the Exterior Of Your Home!

Deciding on a paint color for the exterior of your house can sometimes feel harder than it was naming your first child. Just kidding, but seriously it is a very tough decision and involves a lot of deliberating. Here are a few tips to help you decide on a paint color without completely wanting to pull your hair out.

  1. Homeowner Associations– First thing first, you may want to check with your homeowners association to see if they have any specific colors that you can’t use. Many HOA try to keep all the houses in similar shades so the neighborhood looks more presentable, thus making it easier to sell your house when the time comes. No body wants to live next to the homeowner who painted their house neon green, unless of course you live in San Francisco, in which case- go ahead!
  2. Look at your surroundings– Stop and look around you. What is it that you see in your backyard? Is it a beach, the city, or acres of land and trees? Whatever it is, use this for inspiration. A lot of the best colors come from the outdoors. Use a color that matches or blends with the natural outdoors.
  3. Borrow from the neighbors– Don’t literally paint your house to match your neighbors, but drive around your neighborhood or down the road to get inspired for colors that other people in your area are choosing. You may be surprised there are plenty of different shades of color within a specific color you may like. Take a camera with you on your journey and take pictures of different colors that you might want to consider.
  4. Use the inside of your home- Just as the title suggests, try using the inside of your house as inspiration when picking a color to paint. Who says the pillowcase in your spare bedroom or the color of your love seat isn’t the perfect color for the outside of your house. The goal here is to harmonize.
  5. Details, Details, Details- Do you want your colors to be light to make your place look larger or dark colors to make it look smaller and have more detail? How many colors are you going to choose? Don’t forget that shutters, moldings, doors and decks will need colors as well. Don’t go crazy though. Too many colors will make your house look overwhelming. Finding a happy medium in too much and too little color is key. Try using contrasts of colors or using all different shades from the same color family.

Hope this list helps you get started on picking your perfect exterior paint color. What color(s) have you chosen to paint your Woodstock home? Leave us a comment, we love hearing from you!
