Matte, Gloss, or Eggshell? How to Choose a Paint Finish

choosing paint finishIf you are having your Woodstock house painted, you may think choosing the paint color is of the utmost importance. However, you also need to carefully consider the type of paint finish you want! Paint comes in a range of finishes from matte (a flat finish with no little to no shine) to gloss (a slick finish with a shiny or glassy appearance). So what’s the difference between flat and glossy paints?

Pros and cons of paint finishes

Gloss paints contain more resin, while matte formulas contain more pigment. Another thing to consider is the state of your walls. Matte paint is great for hiding imperfections, whereas if you paint a wall in gloss paint, every imperfection will stand out more.

On the other hand, the glossier a paint, the easier it is to clean the walls without damaging the paint job. Fortunately there are quite a few different paint finishes to choose from, so you can choose the level that’s right for you.

Types of interior paint

Paint finishes from most to least glossy are as follows:

  • High gloss– Great for a dramatic statement. This type of paint can really enhance bold wall colors, and the slick sheen gives a glamorous air to the room.
  • Satin– The high level of gloss to this finish makes it easy to clean and a great paint for high traffic areas in your home.
  • Semi-gloss– A good choice for bright rooms that require regular cleaning, like kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, laundry rooms, and foyers.
  • Eggshell– Eggshell paint gives a low-sheen look similar to matte paint, but is much easier to clean.
  • Flat– Flat or matte paint is great for covering a multitude of sins when it comes to your walls, though we do recommend having your walls repaired before painting.
