Improve Curb Appeal: How to Paint Your Front Door

green painted front doorWhether you’re fixing up your Woodstock home to sell, or just want to freshen up the appearance of your home, painting your front door can work wonders when it comes to curb appeal! Depending on the exterior of your home, you may want to go traditional with a bold black or red door, or add a cheerful, contemporary punch of color with turquoise, yellow, or kelly green.

While painting your door is a fairly easy project with a big visual payoff, you can’t just go at it with a roller and expect good results. First, it’s important to prime the door.  Then you’ll want to follow these painting steps in order to achieve a smooth, professional finish. Use a high density foam roller for the flat planes and a small paint brush or foam brush for the angled panels.

  • Paint the beveled edges using a small brush.
  • Paint the raised panels.
  • Paint the vertical strips between inset panels.
  • Paint horizontally along the strip between top and bottom inset panels. Your horizontal line of paint will cover the edges of your vertical strokes.
  • Paint the horizontal strips at the top and bottom of the door.
  • Finish up by painting the vertical strips on the left and right of the door.
