3 prep tips from professional painters

  • Make sure the walls are clean and dry– Wipe your walls down to ensure that no dust is left behind to mar your painted surface, and let them dry thoroughly to ensure good paint adhesion.
  • Check for problem areas- In normal lighting, it can be hard to tell if your walls have problems. To check for irregularities or damage that need to be addressed pre-painting, shine a bright spotlight or flashlight at the wall.
  • Repair wall– After identifying all nail holes, cracks, and other imperfections, spackle, let dry, and lightly sand. Don’t sand too much or you could end up creating an irregular surface once again. After spackling and any other patching or drywall repairs, be sure to prime the wall to create a uniform paint surface. Failure to prime can result in a splotchy wall and cause you to use much more paint.
